It would mean a lot to me... [Thursday

[ music | The Roots ]

If some of you tried to make it out to this...
It's the 5 year anniversary of Dead Air. This show will be held in one of the small rooms in the Lindbloom Student Center at Green River Community College. It's the first show I've ever put together. Hope to see a couple of you there.

Last update: 50 weeks ago [Sunday
February 8th, 2009]
Since I last posted in this thing a lot of stuff has happened.
Most notably, I graduated college and Ayumi and I broke up.
I live in Seattle now with a girl named Sam.
I have been working a mindless job at a stupid restaurant.
I am back hosting Dead Air with Ian. It almost feels like I never left. It's going to be hard to say goodbye to the show, but we both know its inevitable end is looming closer and closer each week.
I am kinda sorta doing an official tryout tape for 107.7 the end. We'll see.
I am a contributing writer to Seattle Sound Magazine.
I am always on the run.

I never, never thought school was going to end. Now it's over and I find myself missing it.

School

I am almost done with college and it is kinda freaking me out. I remember about 3 years ago I thought to myself that I would never finish. It seemed like so far away.
I'm in the process of applying for a bunch of internships. So far I've only applied at one - Rolling Stone - but there's a very slim chance I'll get that. In the next month I will send in applications to The Stranger, Spin, The Portland Mercury, The Bellingham Herald, The Spokesman Review, The Cascadia Weekly, Seattle Metropolitan and Seattle Sound.

Japan

I am going to Japan for Spring break. After two years I will finally be able to meet Ayumi's family and friends. I can't wait to see where she came from. I really feel like it will bring us closer together. Martin and I will also be going to see Kengo's band As We Let Go with FC Five and I'm pretty excited for that.

Radio

I'm the specialty music coordinator at KUGS 89.3 FM. Not sure if I've posted that in this thing yet. I am in charge of choosing all the jazz, hip hop, reggae, world, blues, metal, etc. for the station. Great gig. But the best part is that I'm on salary and I get five paid weeks off a year...Five!

I'm still hosting a radio show. Dance Floor Justice - hardcore radio- Tuesdays 10-Midnight.

89.3 FM KUGS - www.kugs.org to stream online

Writing

My last post in this journal was an image of the cover of a magazine I have started to write for. So yea, the magazine is called Wonka Vision and it's a 10-year-old music and arts publication based out of Philadelphia. I have three articles being printed in this next issue due out next week. One on Bedouin Soundclash, one on Support Shirts and one on The A.K.A.'s.
I'm about to start on my assignments for next issue: H20, The Cave Singers and Blacklisted.

Oh also, I update this blog more often these days.

mini life update [Saturday
September 29th, 2007]
[ music | none ]

Fall quarter has started. I have decided to stop delaying the inevitable and dive in to my mass media law course that is required for my major. Not stoked, but it should be alright.
I'm editing the Arts and Life (A&E) section of the Western Front as well and I'm sure that will be taking up a good portion of my life.
I'm working as the specialty music coordinator at KUGS. This means I'm in charge of all the jazz, hip hop, electronic, bluegrass, folk, metal, punk etc. music that comes into the station. It's been great so far.
I'm still hosting my radio show but I have a new time slot for Fall quarter. Dance Floor Justice Tuesdays from 10-midnight. Check it.
I'm still writing for What's Up magazine. Just turned in a feature on Henry Rollins.
My first articles for Wonkavision magazine are coming out in Issue #39. It will be available October 18th at selected newsstands.
I wrote three features: Neurosis, Cold World and I Heart U Productions. Two of them made the cover. Stoked

Ayumi is back in Bellingham and she keeps me smiling at times when I'm stressed beyond belief.
I miss my friends.

It's been quite some time since I've posted in this thing.
I finished my first summer quarter ever a couple weeks back. I'm pretty satisfied with the results.
I hating being an editor at first, but after a couple weeks I really started to get a hang of it.
Oh yea, I made a trip down to California for Sound and Fury. It was wicked rad and I saw a ton of great bands and people that I missed.
I'm going to Warped tour this Saturday. Yay for corporate punk rock fests.
Ayumi is leaving for Japan on Tuesday. She will be gone for a month. Bumout.
My last year of college starts next month.
I'm moving into the dopest house you could imagine with four good friends in a couple weeks. Pics to come.
I'm going to be in the south end all next week. So Ashley Church, I'm hoping we can hang out.

Still working a lot at KUGS. I'm the specialty music coordinator.
Still doin my hardcore radio show (Dance Floor Justice) Wednesdays at 10pm.

having the weekend off reminded me how much i like actually doing things. when im here at school i don't do anything. it's kind of wierd.
rainfest was superb. seeing a ton of friends and about 35 rad hardcore bands made my weekend the best ive had in a very long time.
now i need to get back to my schoolwork. i'm almost done with my first school year at western. it's really wierd to think that last year i was so anxious, nervous and excited to be here. in all honesty though, i love it here. i know i bitch and complain about my homework and how much sleep i miss per week, but it really is awesome. the school, the people location. all of it.
so i have an official AS job up at KUGS as the specialty music coordinator which i can tell is going to be pretty sweet. oh and i'm going to be an editor for the Western Front this summer. i'm doing the arts and entertainment/features section, so i'm pretty excited about that.
other than that, i dunno, life is good.
back to work.

Journalism crap... [Friday
April 13th, 2007]
[ music | none ]

I've immersed myself in the non-stop, frustrating, and stressful world of journalism.

My first paid article was published today for the Foothills Gazette, a paper that's mostly distributed to outlying areas of Whatcom County. I covered a county council forum about unincorporated county associations.

In other news...I felt like stabbing anything near me with a rusty screwdriver earlier this morning. I was pissed. I almost couldn't talk, I was so pissed/frustrated.

So I work my ass off on this Aesop Rock article for his upcoming show on Campus this Sunday. I was super excited for the issue to come out today so I get put this article in my clip book...
So I pick up the issue, turn to the page, and apparently Mollie Foster wrote my article...??? WTF?
Yes that's right, my editor mis attributed my article....fuccccck!
bummed bummed bummed...I talked to her and I understand it was an honest mistake...but stilllllll.
So they fixed the article online, and we are going to try and print it out on newsprint to try and "re-create it" for my clip book. lame.
But I did get a pretty cool feature in the paper, and I'm pretty stoked about that.
I'm also reviewing music and writing for What's Up!

Here's a few links to my articles if anyone's interested...

It's official...spring is my favorite season.
I came back from break yesterday, and something hit me. While driving down Chuckanut Drive back to my house I realized how beautiful this season, my family, my girlfriend, my friends and my life are. I skateboarded around campus and took everything in. When I saw a person that I usually just say hi to in passing I stopped and hugged them, chatted about break, and was thoroughly interested in talking to them. Today was the same way for me. This weather and season makes me so positive about everything.
I realized how much more of a pleasant person I am when I have a smile on my face.
My roommate Dave and I went a great house show on Humboldt street earlier tonight. Taiga from Seattle and Maladie from Tijuana played together, and I was really impressed.
There's a lot of really cool things going on in my life right now, but I could go on and on about them, so I think I'm just going to make a list of stuffff....
-Ayumi
-My mom possibly getting a new job
-Seeing a lot of my friends on Spring break
-Skateboarding
-The Bouncing Souls/Strike Anywhere/The Loved Ones playing at Western!
-possibly getting a job as specialty music director of KUGS
-my roommates
-New hardcore radio show Saturday Nights 12-2 am on KUGS 89.9 3 (www.kugs.org to stream)
-Seeing Tim Butcher and Sam on Sunday
-Writing for The Western Front
-Finishing this article

excited for this [Friday
January 5th, 2007]
I visited one of my favorite teachers the other day at GRCC. I was so excited to see my sociology professor, Louise Hull. I can easily say that she is the best teacher I have ever had. She's that kind of teacher who challenges you to try your hardest, and makes it so that you actually WANT to do so. She's doing great of course, and we sort of shot the shit/chatted about my future sociology studies and whatnot. Funny thing is though, if it wasn't for that woman, I don't think I would have half the interest I do in sociology.
But the thing I was the most excited about: I talked to her about setting up a class presentation by Greg Bennick (Former Trial vocalist). Bennick recently released a documentary he worked on for a few years called "Flight From Death," which is about the worlds beliefs about death and how we fight against it. Anyways, I bought this DVD for Loise and gave it to her the last week of my Sociology of Death & Dying class. She came back the next day raving about it, and told me she will be showing it for all of her future classes on the subject.
So instead of just watching the DVD, I figured it would be rad to have Greg Bennick come in and speak to the class about the film, and his thoughts on the subject. So yea...if all goes right, Greg Bennick will be speaking in Mrs. Hull's Sociology of Death and Dying Class next quarter (this reason alone is enough to sign up for the class)!

So stoked about that!

Ayumi is already living in Bellingham, and she loves it! I'm moving back up on Sunday...
This time it will be with three of my friends, in a house that is kinda rundown, but fully awesome.
My room is ridiculously small though, but I prefer not to talk about that. It'll be fine. Enough for me.
Im taking some solid classes next quarter, which Im excited to find out more about.
-Sociology of Urban Development/Community
-Sociology of Domestic Violence/Family Relations
-Reporting

Tomorrow is my last day @ Silver Platters over the break. It's been great working with all my friends and everything, but I dont know if I'm going to be working there on breaks anymore. I might try and get a steady job up in Bellingham...we'll see...
Speaking of Silver Platters, the company just bought the Tower Records on Queen Anne in Downtown Seattle (Tower went out of business)..
this is a solid move by the company and I really see it helping Silver Platters and expanding it...exciting...

anyways, this post has probably gone on a little too long..I'm going to go back to playing requests (I'm up filling a shift on KGRG's All Request Friday)

[ music | Danielson Famile ]

i kissed my girlfriend for the first time in four months today. she napped in my bed while i stole internet from the neighbors on my laptop..(im actually doing that as i type this)
now i get to see her whenever i want. having her in japan sucked, but it also probably helped me in the academic department. i have gotten word on 3 out of 4 classes, and I did pretty well. i was kinda worried about how i would do my first quarter up at western...
i drank jaritos and hung out with jacob and michael gee earlier tonight. michael always comes up with some pretty fantastic songs out of nowhere.
im pretty satisfied with everything right now.
strike that..very satisfied!
oh, and danielson famile is hilariously good...

So it looks like I'm going to be moving in with Nathan Hanson next quarter.
It seems like Birnam Wood breeds anti-social attitudes here in Bellingham. I dunno, I guess you can make the best in any situation. From talking to other people in dorm-like situations here @ Western, the general consensus is that sharing the same room with someone you didn't choose to live with leads to some very anti-social situations..
Conversations can basically consist of me asking, "Hey, how's it going?," which he'll respond to by saying something like, "Eh pretty good, just doing some research." Then silence. For 2 hours. This is when leave the room to go get some food, study at the library, and hang out with some friends. When I get back though, it's the same situation over again.
Good guy all around though. I definitely lucked out with my roommates. They are all normal, down to earth guys who are pretty chill. I was worried when I heard some of the horror stories from peoples freshman year...
I am excited to move into the new place. It's a couple blocks down from the Viking Commons, so even though it's off campus, it's a lot closer than where I'm living right now.
I'm pretty satisfied with how I've been keeping up with school and my grades for this quarter...oh oh oh aaaaannnnnnd I got into all the classes I needed to. Fuck to the yes!

NEXT WEEK AYUMI IS COMING BACK TO WASHINGTON!
It has been four months since I have seen my girlfriend, and it has been hard. I have just tried to focus on school, and realize that when she gets back everything will be just like it was....I hope it is.
She's going to Western, so I have to send her some links to single room apartments around Bellingham.
In six days we will have been going out for one year. Maybe not a LONG relationship for some people, but the longest I've ever been in.
It's great.
